TIFFIN, OH–Aqua announced plans this week to replace 1,697 linear feet of water main along West Perry Street in Tiffin. Crews will replace cast iron pipe that has been in service for more than 100 years with ductile iron pipe that is stronger, lighter and more corrosion resistant. The project also includes installing three new hydrants to assure service availability for firefighting. Additionally, 10 new valves will be installed along the route to minimize service interruptions during future maintenance or repairs. The project will begin on June 9 and be completed in September.
“Aqua is continually evaluating its water mains measuring age, condition and service issues, to determine the right time scope and location for projects like this,” said Aqua Ohio’s Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “With more than 100 years of service, it is time to retire this main with a new pipe that is even stronger.”
Construction will begin at the intersection of West Perry Street and South Sandusky Street and proceed east along Perry to Frost Parkway. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to use extreme caution while work is underway. The zone will include hazards including lane closures, parking restrictions, moving machinery and open trenches. Crews are expected to be active Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm.
Water service will be interrupted briefly while 52 customers as their properties are connected to the new main near the end of the project. Those customers will be notified prior to the interruption. Final lawn restorations will be complete after the project and summer heat subsides enough to allow the grass seed to germinate.
Underground Utilities Inc. of Monroeville, OH was selected to construct the project. In addition to this $1,124,000 investment, Ballenger said Aqua expects to spend approximately $6.3 million in the Tiffin area this year and more than $72 million across Aqua’s 40 Ohio systems.
