Information via OSS Solid Waste District

To help keep harmful materials out of local landfills, the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste District holds annual special collection events for residents to dispose of unwanted materials properly. These materials are grouped into four categories: Electronics, Tires, Appliances, and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). These collections are open to all residents of Ottawa, Sandusky, and Seneca Counties, including Bellevue and Fostoria. Businesses and institutions are not eligible to participate.

To ensure the right amount of supplies and workers for each event, residents must pre-register. You can register online at RecycleOSS.org or by calling 419-334-7222 ext. 0 and following the prompts. Collection locations will be available in all three counties. Specific information, including dates, times, and locations, will be provided during registration.

Registration for the HHW collection starts Sept. 1 and runs until Oct. 9. Note that the following items are no longer accepted at the HHW collection: motor oil, lead acid batteries, gas cylinders, and non-regulated putties and adhesives.

Used motor oil can be taken to auto service stores like Wal-Mart, O’Reilly’s, and Advance Auto Parts, as well as local auto service shops. Shops selling lead acid batteries will also accept old batteries for proper disposal.

Rechargeable batteries can be recycled at Lowes Department stores, while single-use alkaline batteries can be disposed of in your trash once they are dead. Gas canisters and cylinders, including propane, helium, Freon, isocyanates, CO2, O, MAPP gas, acetylene, and argon, are no longer accepted at the HHW collection but can be disposed of locally at Environmental Recycling Group and Rader Environmental.

This year, there will be only one collection date for each type of special collection, making registration essential. If you don't register, you cannot participate. For specific dates, times, and locations of all special collections, refer to the information provided during registration.

By participating in these special collection events, you help protect our environment and community by ensuring hazardous materials are disposed of safely and responsibly. Your cooperation in pre-registering and following the guidelines ensures that the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste District can efficiently manage these collections. Together, we can make a significant impact in reducing waste and promoting a safer environment locally for us all. Thank you for your commitment to keeping our counties clean and green.
