The founding of the City of Tiffin dates back to 1812 with Fort Ball, a military depot during the War of 1812. On March 25, 1822, Tiffin was made the permanent seat of Justice for Seneca County, and then in 1824, with the establishment of Seneca County by the Ohio Legislature, Tiffin became the county seat. Today, Tiffin is the Education Community, with two private universities, a diverse economy and nearly 18,000 residents who call it home.

Are you building or making changes to property?

In the City of Tiffin no building or structure (including movable sheds) shall be erected, moved, added to, or razed without a zoning permit issued by the Zoning Inspector. For more information about the city's zoning codes or for a permit, call (419) 448-5425.

The City of Tiffin does not have a residential building code, thus, any improvement which does not alter the existing footprint of a residential structure on a property does not require a zoning permit.  The Richland County Building Department serves as the commercial building department for the City of Tiffin.  All commercial alterations should be coordinated with SafeBuilt at the Seneca County Building Dept. at 419-447-8022

Additionally, Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) administers the Community Housing Impact & Preservation (CHIP) Home Repair program on behalf of the City of Tiffin. CHIP provides home repair assistance for a variety of needs, including furnace replacements; water heater replacements; roof replacements; electrical upgrades; plumbing upgrades and ADA modifications.
